When life gives you lemons, make lemonade

Well I hope everyone is thirsty because I have a whole lot of lemons I need to make the most of.  Last week I found out I was losing my classroom in our one year old building...essentially brand new.  I had to move the majority of my stuff( and I have lots of stuff) into my storage cupboard to make room for an added fifth grade class.  Kiss all that wonderful storage, three sinks, and great big work space goodbye.  I am now in the caf"art"teria and on the cart.  I am trying my best to adjust and make the most of what I have, but i have a sour taste in my mouth from all those lemons!  Guess I just need to adjust and make lemonade!

  1. Jessica,

I am sending you a great big mommy hug because I have been in your shoes! I had my beautiful new artroom (20 years ago)for 5 years before I lost it to SPED. I did the cart thing for 10 years and finally got the room back for about 5 years before we underwent a total building remodel last year. I moved into my new "Art Suite" last month and it was worth the wait. Hang in there and you will get your room back!

  2. So sorry to hear your news. I, too, once had to give a room 1 week after school started. I know just how you feel, and it doesn't feel good!!

  3. I spent a number of years without a room, sharing a room, teaching in a math classroom on the 2nd floor with my supplies in the basement, teaching in an industrial arts classroom, etc. But I have been blessed for many years now with a beautiful room.

What is so tragic in your story is that your building is new! What a bit of pitiful planning, that only a year down the road they don't have room flexibility. It's a terrible shame. Keep your chin up; it all could change again in a heartbeat.

  4. I, too, have experienced the feeling of being cast to the side to make room for, let's just say, another teacher. Just this year I have moved 3 times. I'm tired of moving, I think I'm done for this year. I am learning this is part of being an elementary art teacher. So, I thought about moving to middle or high school, but I know that the grass is not always greener on the other side. For one, I wouldn't get the love I get from my little ones, and I am thankful that my students still have art and that I still have a job! I teach at two schools and work circles around some teachers I know, but I am grateful for what I have. Hang in there!
